The moonlight may have been faint, but paired with the neon lights of the clubs’ signs, the night was almost as bright as the day. Bright enough that it felt like I was in the real world again, where I had to face the facts of my actual life.
Straight. Bisexual. Lesbian. The labels hung over me, and for the millionth time I wondered how I was supposed to choose. Straight had always been the default option, but I’d just spent half an hour bumping and grinding with a girl and every nerve ending in my body was throbbing for more.
I walked to the edge of the building. The music from inside was barely audible, and I wondered at how it had put me in its thrall. Everything seemed so simple past those two doors. With that pumping music, even conversation was nearly impossible. Words only took you so far—you had to rely on bodies to communicate…
Groups of people huddled at the side of the building and around the doors. Whether they were smoking or in line, I couldn’t quite tell. I bit my lip and walked past them, looking for the place I’d seen before. My plan had seemed so smart in the safety of my place. The chilly bite of the evening was sobering me again, and the scheme was disintegrating into nothing before my eyes.
There was no plan without Misty, and it didn’t look like she was going to follow me out here. Everything had been going so well at first—once I’d gotten past her initial confusion, it seemed like I was in for sure. Then her friends showing up threw a wrench in the operation. As nice as they were, I could’ve gone without seeing them right then.
And then my inane reasoning for coming outside. Why, why, had I told her I wanted to smoke? She knew fully well I didn’t smoke, and if I was starting tonight, she wouldn’t want to be anywhere around. She’d even told me once how much the scent bothered her, and how it lingered for days on end.
Maybe I should go home. Misty wasn’t about to come out of the club. She’d have a better time hanging out with Freddie and Logan, anyway. She might even meet someone else. A woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to just fucking ask for it.
Stopping at the edge of the curb, I heaved a long, loud sigh. Then I jumped at the sound of my name.
“Hey.” Misty shivered once, her grey eyes softer than usual as she looked up at me. “You’re not smoking.”
She’d come. She’d followed me. I lost the ability to form sentences as I gazed at her, trying to process the fact that she was here with me. “No… no… I’m not.”
Instead of speaking, I grabbed her arm. She let out a squeak of surprise, but made no attempt to stop me from pulling her along the street. We passed people going in and out of all the different bars, and I briefly wondered what we looked like to them.
